PAST EVENTS

Sir John Soane’s Museum

The Kent Club enjoyed a fascinating visit to the historic Sir John Soane’s Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields under the Stewardship of our Deputy Chairman WBro. Bogdan Zaha, exploring the remarkable home and collection of one of Britain’s greatest architect.

Sir John Soane, a prominent Freemason, was responsible for designing the first Freemasons’ Hall on Great Queen Street. Widely regarded as one of the leading architects of the Neo-Classical period in the United Kingdom, Soane created not only extraordinary buildings but also a unique museum that remains an enduring expression of his intellect, curiosity and vision.

Members were captivated by Soane’s self-curated collection, where art, architecture and antiquities are carefully arranged in a sequence rich with allegory and symbolism. The museum offers far more than an architectural tour; it provides an opportunity to experience a living philosophy, inviting visitors to reflect on knowledge, virtue, memory and the pursuit of enlightenment—principles that resonate strongly with the values of Freemasonry.

The visit prompted lively discussion throughout, with many members discovering unexpected connections between architecture, symbolism and Masonic thought. As one attendee aptly remarked, “It was a lot more than I was ever expecting from this tour.” That sentiment perfectly captured an afternoon that proved both inspiring and thought-provoking, leaving everyone with a deeper appreciation of Sir John Soane’s remarkable legacy.

The Kent Club, Chairman’s Report – AGM 2026

Brethren, gentlemen

Thank you all for attending this evening.

It gives me great pleasure to report another highly successful year for The Kent Club, the Social Club for London Freemasons and now firmly recognised as the fourth pillar within the Metropolitan events programme, led by the Very Worshipful Brother, John Parry.

At our last AGM, our membership stood at 930. I am delighted to report that this has now increased to 1,080 members—an impressive net growth of 150. When we take into account the natural attrition through resignations, unavoidable losses, and inadvertent membership lapses, this represents sustained growth of just over 10%. This is a tremendous achievement and one for which our membership and recruitment team deserve sincere congratulations.

As The Kent Club has continued to grow, so too has the need to strengthen and formalise our committee structure. Over the past year, we have introduced a number of key appointments to ensure we are well positioned for the future.

Bogdan has taken on the role of Deputy Chairman. Mauro and Wade have assumed responsibility for Communications (IT) and Contact Officer’s respectively. Our Events Team has been strengthened with the appointment of Eddie and, more recently, Robert as Deputy Events Officers. Finally, Adarsh has accepted the permanent position of Secretary of The Kent Club. Together with the other committee members, they form an exceptional team, and I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to each of them for their commitment and dedication.

I would also like to thank Andrei Padure for his valuable contribution during his time on the Committee providing IT support to the Club.

Despite undertaking this restructuring, we successfully delivered 42 events during the year. Event turnover increased from approximately £10,000 to over £40,000, with more than 800 members and guests attending our events. These figures clearly demonstrate both the continued popularity of our programme and the growing reputation of The Kent Club.

Our events have offered something for everyone. Highlights include our President’s Dinner, which sold out within a single day and welcomed 130 attendees; the Gala Night at The Dilly Hotel in Piccadilly; a private tour of No. 1 London, the Duke of Wellington’s historic residence; an exclusive visit to Goldsmiths’ Hall; and even a guided—and carefully supervised—historic London pub tour. The overwhelming majority of these events have been enjoyed not only by our members but also by their partners, families and friends.

Looking ahead, our events calendar continues to expand with an exciting programme of new and distinctive experiences extending well into next year. A particular emphasis will be placed on encouraging members to bring their families and friends, creating opportunities to share memorable experiences whilst strengthening the friendships that underpin our Masonic community.

Equally important is the opportunity these events provide to introduce prospective candidates to Freemasonry in a relaxed social setting. They allow potential candidates to meet members outside of the Lodge room, develop meaningful relationships and gain a genuine understanding of our fraternity before taking the next step. This is invaluable, not only for those considering membership but also for our Lodges and their existing members.

I am also pleased to report continued progress with Pythagorean Chapter No. 79. Rescued from closure by members of The Kent Club Committee, it has been successfully repurposed as a Chapter for Kent Club members. It also provides an excellent pathway for Freemasons from outside London to join London Masonry and thereby become eligible for Kent Club membership. I know this has already happened on at least one occasion during the past year. The Chapter is now approaching 40 members and stands as yet another success story for The Kent Club.

Our promotional initiatives have also continued to gather momentum. Our hymn cards have been extremely well received, while our A5 promotional flyers and business cards continue to be distributed in significant numbers and are now available across several London Masonic Centres including Southgate, Penge, Croydon & Ealing. We will shortly extend our advertising strategy further by placing our A5 flyers on the noticeboards outside both Lodge and Chapter rooms within Freemasons’ Hall. In addition, we have introduced a new digital newsletter, (try the link) which is now available for distribution to Lodge Membership Officers and through a variety of other communication channels. This is an exciting development, and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow.

Perhaps my greatest source of pride is the recognition and standing that The Kent Club has now achieved across Metropolitan Freemasonry. Whether working alongside other Metropolitan events teams, attending national occasions such as the National Remembrance Service at the National Memorial Arboretum with Tom and Norman, supporting Discover Freemasonry events, or engaging with either Past Active Officers or Masters of Lodges, The Kent Club continues to create opportunities for Brethren to contribute their time, talents and enthusiasm in new and meaningful ways.

As I said at the beginning of my report, I shall finish by repeating what is, in my view, our greatest achievement: The Kent Club is now recognised as the fourth pillar of the Metropolitan events team. That recognition reflects the hard work, dedication and commitment of every member of our committee and the continued support of our membership.

Brethren, it is both an honour and a privilege to serve as Chairman of this remarkable Club. I am immensely grateful to my committee for their unwavering support, professionalism and friendship, and equally grateful to every one of our members for their continued encouragement and commitment.

Together, we have built something truly special, and I look forward with great enthusiasm to what we will achieve in the year ahead.

Thank you.

President’s Dinner 2026

House of Commons

On Thursday, 12th June, members of the Kent Club, together with their families and guests, gathered for the President’s Dinner in the prestigious surroundings of the House of Commons.

Following arrival through the historic Palace of Westminster and a drinks reception in Westminster Hall, guests proceeded to the elegant Private Members’ Dining Room for an excellent dinner in the company of friends old and new. The evening was enhanced by the ceremonial music and trumpet fanfare provided by the London Assemble, creating a fitting atmosphere for this distinguished occasion.

The Guest of Honour was the Metropolitan Grand Master, RW Bro Warren Duke, attending in his capacity as President of the Kent Club. In his address, he reflected on the importance of the Club, its traditions, and the enduring friendships it continues to foster, praising the warmth and conviviality that characterised the evening.

Following the President’s address, the Chairman of the Kent Club, WBro Jason Read, responded with a speech thanking the Metropolitan Grand Master for his continued support and expressing his appreciation to everyone whose efforts contributed to such a successful and enjoyable evening.

The evening concluded with guests gathering in the bar to continue conversations before departing after a thoroughly memorable occasion. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a resounding success. We look forward to many more occasions that continue to strengthen the friendships and connections at the heart of the Kent Club.

Historic Pub Tour

On Monday 28 April, members of The Kent Club enjoyed another memorable evening as we explored some of London’s most historic public houses on our Historic Pub Tour under the Stewardship of our Assistant Secretary WBro. Adarsh Shah.

The evening perfectly captured what The Kent Club is all about. Whilst discovering the fascinating stories and rich history behind each venue was a highlight, it was the camaraderie, conversation and laughter shared between members that truly made the event special.

As we made our way from pub to pub, members enjoyed catching up with familiar faces, meeting new friends and sharing stories over a well-earned refreshment. The relaxed atmosphere created an enjoyable evening that everyone could appreciate.

A special thank you goes to Barrie for leading such an engaging and well-organised tour. His knowledge, enthusiasm and storytelling brought each venue to life, making for an informative yet thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended. It is the enthusiasm and friendship of our members that make these events such a success and continue to strengthen the spirit of The Kent Club.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back at our next event.

Sacred Secrets Uncovered at the British Museum

Under the stewardship of our Membership Officer, WBro Norman Jones, The Kent Club rounded off the year with a fascinating journey through history as members and guests gathered at the British Museum for our Christmas British Museum Tour – Sacred Secrets Revealed, led by renowned historian and author WBro Mike Neville.

Over the course of an engaging 90-minute tour, Mike brought to life the remarkable connections between the ancient world, Biblical history, and the symbolism found within Freemasonry. Moving through one of the world’s greatest collections of antiquities, attendees explored artefacts spanning thousands of years, discovering how many of the themes and traditions familiar to Freemasons have their origins in ancient civilisations.

Highlights included the enduring influence of Ancient Egypt on Masonic symbolism, the history surrounding King Solomon’s Temple, the remarkable achievements of Cyrus the Great and Nehemiah in rebuilding the Second Temple, and the dramatic account of Titus and the destruction of Jerusalem. Members were also captivated by artefacts associated with significant Biblical figures and an intriguing insight into the historic connections between Freemasonry and the British Museum itself.

As always, WBro Mike Neville’s exceptional knowledge, engaging storytelling, and ability to connect historical evidence with Masonic tradition made for a memorable and thought-provoking afternoon. His enthusiasm ensured that every exhibit told a story, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation of both history and the symbolism that continues to inspire Freemasonry today.

Following the tour, many of the group continued the festive spirit over food and refreshments, enjoying the opportunity to reflect on the afternoon’s discoveries and share lively conversation with fellow members and guests.

The Kent Club extends its sincere thanks to WBro Mike Neville for another outstanding presentation and to WBro Norman Jones for organising and overseeing the event. It was a fitting way to conclude another successful year of educational and social activities, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to many more memorable events in the year ahead.

President’s Dinner 2025

On 14th June 2025, the Kent Club held its Presidents’ Annual Dinner in the Members Dining Room at the Houses of Parliament. Dining in such a historic and prestigious venue made the evening a truly memorable occasion.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the success of the evening. We look forward to welcoming you to future Kent Club events.

Installation Meeting, 24 April 2025

On 24 April 2025, Kent Club members celebrated a significant milestone with the installation meeting of Pythagorean Chapter No. 79. Consecrated in 1870, this historic chapter is now officially the Special Interest Chapter for the Kent Club, offering members a rare opportunity to experience its rich heritage and unique traditions.

A Distinctive Opening Ceremony

The meeting featured the chapter’s exceptional opening ceremony, one of only three chapters under the English Constitution to work the Domatic ritual. The ceremony, enhanced by the use of a censer by the Thurifer, created a memorable and atmospheric experience for all attendees, particularly for newly exalted members.

Meeting and Dining

The chapter convenes at Freemasons’ Hall, with three meetings held annually on the third Thursday of February, April, and November. Members enjoyed dining within the historic hall, further enriching the sense of tradition and fellowship.

Ceremony of the Keys

An Exclusive Kent Club Evening

On 31st March 2025, Kent Club members gathered at the Tower of London for a truly special experience: the world-famous Ceremony of the Keys. This ritual, performed every night for centuries, gave members the chance to witness history in action inside one of Britain’s most iconic landmarks.

An Evening at the Tower

The night began with a private after-hours tour of the Tower, exploring its ancient walls and hidden corners away from the usual crowds. Members then enjoyed drinks and conversation in the Warders’ Bar, a space usually reserved for the Yeoman Warders themselves. A raffle in support of the Tower added to the friendly atmosphere before the main event.

The Ceremony

As the clock approached 10pm, we gathered in the quiet of the Tower grounds. The exchange was carried out with the same words spoken for generations:

Sentry: “Halt, who comes there?”
Yeoman Warder: “The keys.”
Sentry: “Whose keys?”
Yeoman Warder: “King Charles’ keys.”
Sentry: “Pass then, all’s well.”

This short but powerful ritual symbolised the locking of the Tower and its enduring duty to protect the Crown Jewels.

A Memorable Night

After the ceremony, members returned to the Warders’ Bar to reflect on the experience and enjoy each other’s company before leaving the Tower at 11pm.

The Kent Club is proud to have offered this exclusive event, blending tradition, fellowship, and history into an unforgettable evening.
